The Rock-Hosted Biosphere

چکیده

Our understanding of Earth's rock-hosted subsurface biosphere has advanced over the past two decades through collection and analysis fluids rocks from aquifers within continental oceanic crust. Improvements in cell extraction, sorting, DNA sequencing, techniques for detecting distributions activity have revealed how combination lithology, permeability, fluid mixing processes controls diversity heterogeneous distribution microbial communities fractured rock systems. However, functions most organisms, rates their growth, remain largely unknown. To mechanistically understand what physiochemical hydrological factors control biosphere, future studies are needed to characterize physiology microorganisms adapted mineral-associated growth under energy- nutrient-limited conditions. Experiments should be designed detect synergistic interactions between microorganisms, minerals, at highly variable turnover rates. ▪ The is controlled by variations porosity, chemical disequilibrium. Several imaging can sensitively biosphere. poorly known.

The origin, source, and cycling of methane in deep crystalline rock biosphere

The emerging interest in using stable bedrock formations for industrial purposes, e.g., nuclear waste disposal, has increased the need for understanding microbiological and geochemical processes in deep crystalline rock environments, including the carbon cycle. Considering the origin and evolution of life on Earth, these environments may also serve as windows to the past. Various geological, ch...

Petrography and geochemistry of carbonate hosted-rock in the Karavangah and Dehno Pb-Zn mines at the north of Kuhbanan, Kerman

The hosted-rocks of the Pb-Zn ore deposits in two mines of Karavangah and Dehno (north of Kuhbanan) contain carbonate rocks of the Shotori Formation (Middle Triassic). The identified carbonate facies consists of limestone and dolomite, but ore bodies mainly occurred in dolomite facies. Petrographic studies show that the dolomites can be divided into four classes including fine crystalline, mediu...

Reconnecting to the biosphere.

Humanity has emerged as a major force in the operation of the biosphere, with a significant imprint on the Earth System, challenging social-ecological resilience. This new situation calls for a fundamental shift in perspectives, world views, and institutions. Human development and progress must be reconnected to the capacity of the biosphere and essential ecosystem services to be sustained. Gov...
